GL350 CHAIN AND DELETE OPTIONS

Hey guys,

Sorry for the double post. I posted in the x164 section and didnt realize there was a diesel forum.

So, just recently purchased a 2010 GL350 Bluetec as a project. 182,000 kms or 113,000 miles. All service records since new at the local dealer.

Bought the vehicle broken from the local benz dealer after the previous owner got tired of the repair bill piling up, front air suspension sagged, and swirl motor failure lower ball joints.

Limped the vehicle home and got to work. Previous owner just paid $4000 for some kind of sensor on the transmission, and i think his fuse box melted because it looked brand new with all hella relays.

Managed to get the air suspension fixed, after finding a missing fuse, and a couple of blown fuses. The swirl motor was shorted, so i installed a 4.7ohm resistor to bypass for now to see the car running/before i tear into that further. Got the ball joints done.

It is now out of limp mode and running well. Goes nice. Only cel is for "intake runners stuck closed" or something similar.

I just did the oil change yesterday, not knowing when it was last done. Immediately after changing with 5w30 castrol (229.51 spec), i heard the infamous timing chain rattle on startup. Was not there before i did the oil change, which kind of baffled me a bit because we started it like 15-20 times before we got it in the garage. But it is now present, every cold start for about 2-3 seconds.

Also, i noticed a STRONG smell of what i researched to be an ammonia type smell that burns your eyes. Whitish smoke under load, especially if i hold the brake and rev the throttle. Stinks and burns in your throat and eyes.

I realized that this is probably an issue with the adblue system. I am not wanting to "repair" this system as i have been looking at possible delete options. There is no emissions testing where i live.

So, i am researching and about to order a new timing chain and tensioner. I figured just the tensioner wont do it, so figured i would just do both. I will be attempting myself, using an online thread as a reference. I have done 2 timing belts before, and am willing to attempt my first chain replacement

Now, once i get the chain done and working properly....the adblue system is my next project to tackle. I am looking to delete it all. DPF, DEF etc. My questions lie here......what is the best place to get this done, and who is the best company to go with to do the tune.. I am going to be knocking out the dpf myself, and etc...its just the tune i need. Also, how does an EGR and swirl flap delete work. Do i have to do anything for the EGR/SWIRL FLAP to delete these, or does the tune take care of it all? Or should i just get the def/dpf deleted? I hve read some stories about malone tuning (not very good ones) and maybe jr tuning...but i'm not sure.

If someone can supply some more info for me for my specific case, considering the swirl flap motor is already bad, that would be awesome! I'm looking to do the deletes once, and be a happy benz owner from there on out. I know i will have issues in the future, but at least the main ones that plague the x164 will be gone like the chain and adblue. I'm just waiting for the air suspension to go.

ALSO, what do i need to tear into the timing chain job. Just the chain and tensioner? I see the method is to attach the new chain to the old one and feed it through. Any other parts? And what brands? OEM ONLY?

Thanks!

There are a few delete tunes out there. I went with Malone Tuning a couple years ago and am happy.

Thanks! Did you have to get a delete pipe? Ive seen some who say they banged out the current dpf pipe. Is that doable do you know?

Thanks!

Custom-made using my flanges. Instead of doing the same, I suggest you remove it, gut it from the top as others have done and then reinstall.

I think you're talking about the DEF system. I had the EGR/DEF/DPF deletes done. As an aside, there's some other cat in the exhaust stream. Do NOT remove this as quite a few people have complained of a strong smell from the exhaust afterwards. My shop convinced me not to remove it.
