Dipstick!!! (W164)

Now that I have your attention... lol!
What is the capacity of engine oil from the full mark to the low mark on the dipstick?

I have almost gotten the mechanic to do the oil cooler seal replacement for me. Until then, I am going to need to replace the lost oil. I am down 1/4 inch on the dipstick... or is it metric!!! ummm... down 8mm on the dipstick!! So yea, I want to know the capacity from low to max of the dipstick range so I don't overfill like the previous owner did.

WOW!! I hope that makes sense.

Look in your owner's manual. If it's only down 1/4" (6.3mm) don't worry about it. Both of ours are 1 liter from full to add. No need to add until it gets down to "add".

1/4"=6mm, so you have an error somewhere.
6mm above min is about perfect level for engine use.
Most of MB engines have about 2l between min and max mark, but better check with the manual.

Thanks!!
I was just guessing at the metric conversion...😆
It ended up being 2 Liters from full to add, as per the manual. I really thought it was going to be 1L too.

That's odd! I checked both of our manuals and they both say 1 L. (OM651 and M276)

You shouldn't need to add oil until level reaches the lower mark. Good advice.
Let me add too, from dealing with many different vehicles - each motor has a natural level above which it will lose oil.
Whether from splash to blowby, or seepage across the main seals, there is what I'll call an "effective maximum level" of oil, and the motor will shed excess once it's exceeded.

You can find this level by filling the car to the upper mark (, or especially if you 'overfill' it) and then see where it falls to in the first say, 1000 miles of operation after service,
If you overfill beyond the high mark, guess what? In about the same time frame it will come back down to it's preferred level.
It will then stay at that level for the service interval(, or lose more but very slowly) as compared with the initial loss. This is for a normally-working motor.

If the oil-control ring is stuck or there is some other issue raising consumption, there won't be any pause in loss of oil, it will be continuous.

Everyone should take this into account as they get familiar with a 'new to me' vehicle.
Once you know that actual preferred level for the car, you really know what you're looking for if you haven't checked the oil in a while.
It's a lot like looking both ways before you cross a street. Twice! Because then you have a good sense of what is moving (, AND HOW FAST).

Best wishes to all
