W210 E290TD final drive ratio

Hello everyone, I've tried looking up the final drive ratio for the E290TD 5-speed manual but to no avail.

I hate having an open diff, the area I live in is rough enough that i need a locking diff but I need the final drive ratio to find a suitable diff.

Thanks in advance😀

If you jacked up one side and spun the wheel, would that in turn spin the driveshaft? Then you could just count the revolutions compared to one spin of the wheel.

I don't think that will give you the correct answer, at least no directly. I'm reaching farther back than I really remember, but, the wheel turns the side gear, which turns the spider gears which turn the ring gear which turns the pinion and drive shaft. It sticks in my mind that you have to turn the wheel two revolutions, but I could be wrong...

On older RWD cars the ratio is stamped on the rear lower left ear of the diff housing where the rear cover meets the housing.

Thanks John - I don't know the answer - just that I "thought" it was roughly the process?

I guess it wouldn't be all that difficult to mark the driveshaft with a white line and have someone roll (or very slowly drive) the car (NOT jacked up) while another person laid down and observed the driveshaft for one tire revolution? Then, since this is a car, you'd probably need to jack it up (without) moving the wheels to cound the final last rotation of the driveshaft if it wasn't visible... or maybe just a mirror on a stick?

Just trying think about a way to do this that would definitely tell the ratio instead of relying on the internet.....

It's going to be either half or double, so only one answer will make sense. My head hurts, but, I think, if you spin the wheel one time the driveshaft will turn half as many times as it would if both wheels were turning the speed (no differential effect.) So, if one revolution of the wheel gives you 2 turns of the drive shaft then it's a 4:1 ratio. I think...
