OM642 PCV
Hey all, what is the deal with the crazy complicated PCV? I dont think anything is wrong with mine, but was going to replace it anyhow because it is an unknown in my system; then I saw the cost ranging from $100 - $300. Can someone explain if there is a test for it? Can it be cleaned? Is there a know replacement value of some sort? It looks like two major parts and a preformed hose?

Personally, I replace the CCV assembly every 100K miles. When the membrane fails, it leads to oil consumption. Eventually it can plug your DPF and cause a host of other issues. There may be a way to test it, but I’ve always thought of it as a routine maintenance item.
The common recommendation is to replace the CCV assembly with a genuine part. I bought mine from ID Parts for around $180 a few years back.
It’s kind of tough to access the back of the cam (especially the first time you do the job), but like anything it’s much easier the second time you do it.

Is there a way to know if the membrane is blown? I am not consuming much oil, no problems right now. Does it ever fail closed? That is my biggest concern.
The ID Parts one is the one I was leaning towards too!

Never saw a dealer ? So you never got the free replacement of ~$8k worth of parts included in the "Dieselgate" settlement ???
Get that done NOW - it's free and all of that stuff including the DPF gets swapped out.

Sorry... I was the first to take it to a dealer, got that all done! Plus a brake booster and air bags on recall.

If the vehicle is driving normally and you have no oil consumption then you’re probably good, but I would go ahead and make plans to replace it soon.
And yes, I have had great experiences with ID Parts! Some of their stuff is too expensive to me (like the oil change kit), but they have a good selection for the OM642. I especially like their intake/turbo seal kit.
