Edmunds tests the M278 V8 twin turbo based W216 CL550, first acceleration numbers for the new motor 12.8@109
Published on 05-16-2011
We finally have some test numbers for the new M278 4.7 liter direct injected twin turbo V8 that will be going into all the new Mercedes 550 models. In the very heavy CL550 at California Speedway (a notoriously slow drag strip) Edmunds Insidline was able to hit a 12.8@109 on street tires. This is in an almost 4700 pound car. What this means is with this motor in the E class the new E550 is going to be putting up acceleration numbers that won't be too far off the previous generation E63 AMG with the M156 naturally aspirated V8 The new E550 is going to be a very fast car and this bodes well for the new E63 AMG. The new CL550 basically matches the elapsed time of the previous naturally aspirated CL63 AMG and is a few MPH off its trap speed.
