I couldn't really find much information on the forum regarding swapping a new wheel into the C207/A207, so I thought I'd throw up my experience for anyone else that wants to do this. My car is a 2010 E550 Coupe.

1) Acquire a steering wheel/airbag of your choice from a newer model. I spent some time looking for one with dark ash wood on it to match the rest of my interior and eventually got lucky on ebay. The seller was unsure it it would work on the E-class, and wasn't sure what it came off of, but since it looks pretty much identical to the wheels coming on the 2013's I took a chance. I think the wheels from the W172, W218, W212, W204, W231 & X204 will all work.

2) Say goodbye to original steering wheel.


3) Disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery, and place a towel or something in between so they don't touch. Also place your key far from the car for good measure.


4) Using a T25 torx key, loosen the two screws on the back of your original wheel as shown in the picture.


5) Once the torx screws are fully loose, the airbag will simply fall out. Disconnect the 4 plugs with a small flathead screwdriver or your tiny fingers.


6) Once airbag is removed and out of the way, use a M10 allen key or same sized socket wrench tool to loosen steering wheel bolt. You will likely need a breaker bar for leverage, it's on there tight.



7) Here is the old wheel and new wheel side by side.


8) Place the new wheel onto the steering column, making sure to line up the upper/lower marks so that your wheel is straight. Using the M10 allen key again, put the steering wheel bolt back in place and tighten (not sure of exact torque rating, may want to re-apply some loctite as well).


9) Plug the maroon and yellow plugs from the new wheel into the steering column, just as you removed them from the old one. The then airbag simply pops into the wheel when you press it. My apologies for forgetting to take pictures of re-assembly.


10) You're done, re-connect your battery, then test to make sure the paddles, horn, illumination, and buttons all work properly.



Whole thing took me about an hour, should anyone have some better suggestions or things to add please feel free.

 

Really like that new wheel, would like one in my car!! Good DIY guidelines and easy to follow, the only thing I would add is once you disconnect the battery leave the car for 15-20 mins before you touch the air bag module, purely from a safety issue of it going off due to residual current issues!!!!!
Oh ensure the wheels are directly facing straight before you remove the old wheel, even though you marked the location, mute points really !!!

As i said here i bought a steering wheel from the A class 2013,it has red stitch and it cost me 350 euro.The airbag i bought it from Ebay with 250 euro.At the MB workshop the electrician will make some mods for fitting and i also went to the leather and painting workshop.Next week i will post the pictures.

I was about to confirm a deal on ebay for a brand new 2012 + steering , which look like the one you post above ,
Is this a direct plug and play ?
Do i need to program in order for the steering to work ?
As my ride is a 5 speed and the steering is meant for the 7 speed, will i face any problem with this ?
Is the price reasonable and if possible any other place or link that i can get cheaper ?
Finally , can anyone confirm the steering that i'm about to buy fits my ride ?

I think you won't face any problems,but make sure that the seller will sell you the correct steering wheel.Anyway mine is one for A class 2013 and i had to make minor mods.I think the one from Ebay is quite expensive.Try the MB dealer and buy the steering wheel from there and the airbag from Ebay.

 

By the looks of it I'd guess that the steering wheel should fit and work properly with no real issues other than the paddles. Is your car a manual 5 spd or auto? Obviously if it's manual the paddles will be useless, but if its auto I'm not sure if the paddles will work the same. I paid about 1000 for mine with airbag, so you may be able to find a better deal than that. They do seem to pop up quite often, not exactly a rare item.

My main concern would be keeping that alcantara in good shape

 

Hi , mine is a 5 speed auto trans , do you think the new steering paddles work ?
Currently my steering paddles work fine , but i'm wondering does it work it switch to the new steering .
Can you advise , where to get a better deal that this , i try searching but couldnt find any .

Hey Caker, how do you pull out the airbag on the new wheel since it's no longer held down by screws.

 

There's two little dimples on the back of the steering wheel that you push a small screwdriver or something into, and the airbag simply pops out. The screwdriver will release a spring loaded peg inside the wheel which hold the airbag in place.

Someone at MB told me that you can void your warranty if you wap ur own steeringg wheel and have someone else other than MB INSTALLED?

Hi, I have a W212 E class, I would like to SWAP my steering wheel to a newer model with a different airbag, I got recently the steering wheel and the airbag, before that I started the swap I would like to know, if I remove the original airbag and replace it with the new one, does this will generate an error code, if yes, How I can remove it safely and be sure that the new airbag will work. Does anyone of you got this problem ?

 

Remove the negative cable for 15 mins for safe. It should not generate any code that way. Remember to swap the chip or it may not work.

 

I don't think i could swap the ship, as it is not the same shape. I hope 15 mn without battery will avoid getting airbag error. Thanks
