My impression is it is by factory. For example the silver one is 250 CDI, which is 4 cylinder 2 liter diesel. It does not look good on a cabriolet or coupe 
BUT I must say I have seen 350 CDI there, also without any markings. Maybe it is a new trend to skip these unnecessary markings (unless E400,E500, SL63 AMG).

It just seems a little odd to me. There is a little "prestige" as a person moves up in "class" in a vehicle. It is almost like MB is attempting to discourage people from buying a more upscale car. Not to mention it will be a guessing game if someone decides to challenge another driver to a contest.

It may be more fun but..... People then start bragging about how they really nailed a new Benz... But it could make it more fun if I pull off my labels.... Not very many stock cars can put much on a 4.6 bt engine.
The engine sound stock on a E550 (I'm on the other side of the pond) while not bad is nothing to write home about. I've never driven a 350 so I do not how it compares.
I do find it interesting the differences between countries and how a person can order a MB. For example, in most of the world there is at least one (most seem to have 3) diesel options. Most countries have the 4.6 engine as tops, but it looks like the top engine in Britain is a 3.0 bt that we can not even get. Checking the MB web sites for different countries can be interesting.
