Pictorial Oil Change for E350

I did this process this past weekend (eventually with the help of a friend). Should have taken about 30 minute, but ended up taking almost an hour.

My usual way of removing the oil (for my 2001 W210) is through aspiration from the dip stick tube, but this engine (4matic) did not allow for the full aspiration through the tube. I was only able to aspirate 5.5 qts of the total 6.9 qts in the engine. I enlisted the help of a friend to drain the remainder of the oil through the drain plug at the bottom.

1. Start and warm the engine up to driving temperature, then let cool for about 15 minutes.

2. Raise the hood up to the first resistant point, then gently push it further to raise it to the highest point.

3. Remove the front engine cover, and set aside.

4. Remove dip stick and insert evacuator tubing. Start aspirating the oil (perhaps possible with the RWD to remove all the oil). Or drain oil through the bottom plug.

5. While oil is draining, remove filter housing using a 74mm, 14-flute adapter. There's going to be quite a bit oil oil in the housing, so be careful to minimize any drip.

6. Remove the used filter from the housing by pulling hard on the filter (it's locked in the housing via a force fit).

7. Remove the large O-ring from the housing, clean the housing and apply a drop of new oil in the groove of the O-ring before placing the new O-ring into the groove. (New O-ring is supplied with the filter kit). A smaller O-ring is found preinstalled in the new filter.

8. Install the new filter into the housing, using some force to push the filter into place and its correct placement is confirmed when a "click" is heard.

9. Install the new assembly in place with first hand-tightening the assembly and finally using a torque wrench set at 25Nm.

10. When all the old oil has been removed, replace the dip stick and fill the required quantity through the filler port. Replace the filler cap. Clean up the work area.

11. Start the engine and let cool for a few minutes. Check the oil level to ensure the correct mount has been added.

12. Now to preform the software reset to let the computer know the service has been completed.
a. Insert key and turn to position 1.
b. Make sure the instrument show the odometer setting.
c. Press and hold the call answer button (furthest on the right side of the steering wheel) and in quick succession, press and hold the "OK" button in the middle of the left side of the wheel.
d. A menu will appear showing the options - Vehicle Data - Dyno Test - ASSYST PLUS. Choose the ASSYST PLUS option.
e. A new menu will appear showing - Service Data - Full Service. Choose Full Service.
f. Finally, choose Confirm Full Service, and confirm it.
g. The reset is now complete and can be checked using the Service Data option which will show the the number of days and miles until the next due service.

I'm attaching 10 pictures which I hope will complement the above. This pictorial is uploaded in 2 part - with 6 and 4 picture respectively.

Just curious, as a new MB owner, E350 Coupe, why not drain all the oil from the drain plug, wouldn't that be quicker and easier way to drain all the oil or am I missing something?

Topside oil change on 2014 E350

Thank you the comprehensive write-up. I like you found that extraction via the oil check tube left exactly 1.5 quarts of oil in my 2014 E350. Not the desired results. Subsequently I've bought a set of "RhinoGear 11909ABMI RhinoRamps Vehicle Ramp - Pair (12,000lb. GVW Capacity)" for $39 from Walmart. These accommodate the low ground clearance and allow me to get under with a creeper and undo the 2 panels held on by the 8mm screws and undo the 13mm drain plug and fully drain and change the oil and filter. No more of a job than any other of my cars with the exception of the couple extra minutes to remove and re-attach the panels.

Something comes to mind with regards to changing the oil via the drain plug under the car. Something to the effect of there's a crush washer on it and you'll have to replace that each time...something like that. This is my second benz and my 2008 C350 never had the oil changed via the drain plug. It had over 200K on it when I traded it in for my E350. I also understand that siphoning out the oil via the dipstick is how the dealers do it, so that how I do it as well. It takes me a little longer for me to do it, but I do "wiggle" around the tube for a while making sure that I'm pulling as much oil out as I can. I then stick it down into where the filter goes and pull out what I can from there.
Just my two cents....

That's exactly how I feel. Why siphon and then open the drain plug. Just open the drain plug and do it once.

I have the 4matic E400. I plan to siphon the oil also. Have been doing it for year as along as the filter is at the top. My question is why can't you siphon all the oil out with the 4matic? The process should not have anything to do with all wheel drive. Anyone can explain this?
