'09 E350 WON'T SHIFT INTO R OR P

Hi, when I come to a stop and want to park, I'm not able to shift past Neutral and go into Reverse &/or Park. the shift lever completely is blocked unless I turn off the ignition and am then able to fully shift past N into P.
YES, I'm able to shift into P if I pull the brake pedal up (towards me) slightly when I'm in N.
Someone has suggested that I have my shifter assy &/or Trani conductor plate checked (?) is that expensive fix ?
thank you for any suggestions. YES, I am not a home auto mechanic and will have to go to independent or dealer for this.

Could be brake pedal switch (MSRP about $36), simple replacement. I would suggest having independent start with a quick test using MB DAS (diagnostics) for peace of mind.
