E-Class E400 Cabriolet
New Member here - questions re 2016 E Class Cabrio
Hello all,
I have been looking into the purchase of a 2016 E Class Cabrio. I have been communicating with the dealership, however, a few questions came to mind that I thought would be best if posed to those outside the dealership. Can anyone comment on the following:
- Recall on airbag remains open (is this consistent with E Class Cabrio's?)
- I have been offered an opportunity to purchase an add'l warranty to cover the overall vehicle (is $4995 reasonable?)
- Any problems I might expect.
The car is currently in the care of Pleasanton, CA Mercedes dealership. The car is not Mercedes certified due to the open outstanding recall.
Can anyone offer any thoughts re any of the above.
Respectfully,
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
I would think a reasonable request would be to have the recall addressed prior to purchasing the car if you decide to proceed. I bought my coupe with the recall still open and it was fixed eventually.
Not sure what your warranty covers ($5k seems high), but I think dealers will compete on extended warranties and a forum search may help you find other sources to get quotes.
I have a '16 E400 coupe and before that a '16 E400 sedan. Both cars have been 100% trouble-free.
Best of luck!

Deb,
If it were me I would ask them to fix the airbags and make the car certified if the airbags are causing the onl item of the car not being certified.. You get a different warranty included with a certified vehicle.. Not sure why they would not want to certify, maybe is to charge for extended warranty or the mileage is too high etc. not sure..
I will tell you I own a 2011 E350 Cab and a 2018 GLS450 and neither of them has been to a dealer for warranty or service except for the recalls. I have had no issues at all..
Regards,
Mike

I would consider this an "opportunity" for the dealer to make $4,995 additional profit. Just for fun, why don't you search CarMax for the car you're interested in and compare prices with your M-B dealer. I ended up buying from CarMax and was completely satisfied with the process

Thanks so much! Information has been very helpful. The dealer has been noncommittal re the airbag replacement. Seems like this may be an issue for more than MB owners.
Again, your information is appreciated!
Best,
Deborah

I'd use the open Takata airbag recall as a negotiating point. I just called my SA regarding my 2015 and he told me the parts are still not available and they don't expect any until the end of the year if even then. If MB will not CPO because of the open recall, that's got to be worth some discount $$$...

Purchased a 2016 E class Cab this year. Had 13K miles, from a reputable non-MB dealer. Car was still under some factory warranty. Have paid as much as 3K to extend a factory warranty for 2 additional years at MB dealer on certified car(not this one). Had two recalls open. One for air bag and one for voltage in the steering column(not sure). Brought car, made an appointment with MB and had both done no charge. Sounds suspect that an MB dealer won't certify a car when they are required by law to fix. I know the bags have had some back order issues. They brag about the comprehensive certification process. Maybe you could get a look at the certification check list to see what the real deal is. I have owned Certs and non Certs. The key is current condition + a good warranty.
