Silly problem

I was cleaning the car today and was looking for the cause of a noise I have been hearing recently from the boot. Found out the plastic mounting bracket that the tool kit plastic 'basket' screws into that holds the spare tyre in place has broken. Had a good look and the mounting looks to be an integral part of a metal plate that sits under it. I am thinking this could even be the top of the fuel tank.
Anyone had this and if so how did you fix it?

Fuel tank straddles the hump, under the back seat.

if the plastic "bolt" is broken, just replace it with a new one(it has a space in the bottom where it slides under the metal strap). If the metal strap is broken that's not such an easy fix...will need to have it welded back into place on the trunk floor(not part of the fuel tank)

Well the retaining female fitting is an integral part of the composite floor plate that forms part of the floor of the boot (I think you guys call it a trunk). Ordered the part which is $512 plus $800 to remove the old and fit the new part. Don't you just love the MB parts pricing??

I think I would take the tool kit out and get a AAA membership. $1300 saved, problem solved, and in the unlikely event I need road side service I sit in the car with the air conditioning or heat on and wait for a tow truck.

It's not a lack of sympathy. Truly. Bills for non-fun stuff suck, and I feel for you. I just would have found a different way, but to each their own.
Admittedly, my way wouldn't really have fixed anything. Hope it works out and this solves it.
