Command scroll knob replacement need to be reprogrammed?

Hi, anybody know if a new command scroll knob (part number 212 870 2851) need to be programmed after the replacement to work properly?
I am thinking about buying a new unit online and have it replaced by an independent shop rather than at a dealer.
I know that there are after market aluminum or metal shaft available to replace the broken plastic shaft but I am not mechanically inclined and would rather have somebody else do it, the labor cost may not be worth repairing or just replacing the shaft, replacing the whole unit may take a bit less time?

Thanks,

MP

Yes, when replacing the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) need to perform initial startup using MB diagnostics.

Which means this has to be done at the dealer right?
Otherwise, just try to replace the shaft only, no need to reprogram right?

Thanks,

Dealer or independent with Xentry all circumvented by rebuild.
