Be careful where you place your keys
TL;DR top cover is considered to be inside the car.
So my wife put her top down with her key from outside in her 2013 E350 cabriolet, so she could put our toddler in the back seat. She placed her keys on the top cover to put our daughter in the car. She then proceeded to get in car start it put the top up and drive away. I am sure the keys fell onto the trunk when she put the top up, then fell off trunk after first turn. She didn't get alerted by car for at least 20 mins and around 5 miles from our house. We never found the keys. I tested with my key if it is on the top cover the car will start. If it is on the trunk next to the stainless trim it won't. Also throw my key into the yard and drove away to see how long it would take to alert. I drove around neighborhood for at least 5 mins with no notification.
