Auto Headlamp Function

Hey all. I'm new to the group and have enjoyed reading and absorbing all the interesting info in the forum.
I've been having an issue with the Auto Headlamp function. Occasionally, I'll get a message the function is not available which trips the low beams to come on and cannot be turned off. When I stop and restart the engine, the system is now working and the DRLs come back on. This issue is very random and somewhat annoying. My independent shop states the sensor in the mirror area needs replacement, but we haven't gone as far as to discuss price.
My question is if any of you has also experienced the problem and found a solution. Ultimately, if the sensor has to be replaced, can it be performed DIY?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
