what3words Navigation

I just stumbled onto what3words navigation. I had never heard of this. Apparently, its available in 2019 cars with the latest COMAND system (online local search and Mercedes me connect must be active) or MBUX. I tried it this evening and it works in my E53. You use the what3words app to locate any 3m X 3m grid in the world. The app assigns a 3 word name of the grid. You then use voice control and the 3 word location destination name to navigate. You say “navigate to what3words (then say the 3 words). At first I thought this would be pretty useless, why not just enter the address. After thinking about it, I realized that many locations may not have an address or you could choose to navigate to the very specific area in a city block, even a specific parking area. Time will tell if it’s actually valuable, but it is interesting tech that is available in our cars. I don’t know if it matters, but I just updated to version 330 of the voice recognition data. Here are a couple of links explaining what3words.

what3words
Hi everyone,

Having seen the post on what3words I wanted to write and introduce myself. I look after the partnership between Mercedes and what3words so was delighted to hear some positive feedback and a thorough description of how it works in car.

My reason for writing was to offer my support in case of any questions or problems; do post here or message me. With that in mind, I have also attached to this post some instructions on how to enable/activate the service in cars with either MBUX or the latest COMAND navigation.

Finally, I'd love to receive any feedback or stories of how using three word addresses makes getting from A-B easier.

Thanks and happy driving,
Charlie

I’ve checked this out but I can’t see how I would use it. To use it, I’d need to use the What3words app to get the three words and then say that to Mercedes or Waze. Also, for any given location I navigate to has at least half a dozen different what3words to use depending on which 3 sq ft you want to pin point. So basically, to use this, I need to enter an address to get the what3words from that app, then enter the what3words to navigation set a destination. It sure feels like an unnecessary extra step. Maybe if the what3words app were integrated to Apple CarPlay it would be more useful. But for me, I just can’t understand the use case for this setup.
