Interestingly, the shop called earlier in the week and told me that the two pieces on either side of the plate were part of the original (damaged) bumper, but required a cutout to be made on the replacement unit.
I told them it reminded me of the early days when car companies just stuck addons to meet the new bumper laws. We all agreed it looks better without them!
