M264- engine experience, problems?

Hello Guys!

Sorry for the long post in advance!

I’ve loved Mercedes cars since childhood, and last year I finally managed to get one.

Based on my budget and usage habits, I chose a 2021 E200 (M264) Coupé.

I tried to research everything thoroughly (or maybe not so thoroughly....), but at the time there were only a few scattered forum posts about this engine, and they weren’t particularly negative.

In recent months, however, I’ve come across multiple reports saying that this engine can be prone to cylinder head failure at relatively low mileage (typically under 100,000 km), caused by valve seat wear or cracking leading to misfires. There are many long Reddit and MBWorld threads about this issue, but about 99% of them refer to US and Canadian cars.

Also, to make things worse, I did stage 1 ECU tune now it makes 280hp and 440nm torque. (Everything is good so far (temps, shifts overall behaviour), did with a reputable tuner.)

I live in the EU and have an EU-spec model manufactured in Germany. Of course, I’ve looked into this in recent weeks, but neither dealerships nor independent Mercedes specialists here have encountered this issue. I’m a bit concerned—my car is a 2021 model with 97,000 km and currently runs perfectly. I really love it, so I’d be willing to repair it if the cylinder head issue comes up, in the EU its cheaper but the typical cost of cylinder head repair or replacement is still around $3,000–5,000....

Does anyone have similar experience or has heard anything about this issue in the EU or with EU-spec models? I’d really appreciate any information or thoughts.

Thanks!

So many variables. I have a friend who's wife is on her fourth (yes 4!) engine in her car...she is a 65+ year old person who have never, not once hit redline in that car. Others never not ever have an issues.

But, you tuned your car - all bets are off. When you tune a car you need to be prepared for repairs at a faster rate. As for the cost of repair? Easy to cut that - do it yourself or find a good independant mechanic who probably has better skills than some schmuck at the Stealership.

I wonder if the EU got a cylinder head extended warranty.
