1972 220D oil leak

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum. I have just picked up a 1972 220D non turbo. I has an oil leak at he bottom of the starter t the end facing the front of the engine its self. It looks like there is a missing 10 mm bolt.
I have been working VW , Audi and Porsche since 79 and I have never seen this one.
I have yet to pull the starter.
May I have some feedback please.
Thank you

Are you saying the oil is actually leaking out of the starter motor? I do not follow how that would be, as I cannot imaging any oil there. But MAYBE, it is a leaking engine rear main seal that is being blown around to the starter. Or, if automatic transmission, a leaking converter seal doing the same, but I would expect you would see oil out the bottom of the bell housing first.

Thanks for the response.
I pulled the trans an about 1/4 quart of oil leaker out from the bell housing.
Rear main is toast, main bearing seems to be loose.
Looks like a rebuild.
