grey/white smoke coming from a wierdly placed breather tube?
Sorry to be a pest, but I am having trouble figuring this one out, and I've searched the forums and elsewhere but can't find a similar example. Here goes:
there is white/grey smoke coming from the breather tube on my '80 240d at startup and running. The breather tube is not connected to the air filter, but goes to the passenger side wheel well. So, if the window is down on the passenger side, I get a dose of smoke at stops. How can I remedy this, or where can I look for the possible culprit? I know I have some blow by, but the cap doesn't "shake" and there is no oil in the filter. Thanks in advance.

I have since learned that the hose is in the right spot
The previous owner had said that it was wrong, but he has a couple 300D's and theirs is in a different location. My original question is still on my mind, as the smoke (white-ish) is present at idle and it bugs me to be smokin' at stop lights and whatnot. The car does exhibit some blow by, although the cap doesn't jump off doing that test. It seem as though I will have to live with it, or replace some component of the engine, most likely the valve seals? Thanks for any advice!

Oh, I had thought I read somewhere
about leaky valve stem seals contributing to blow by. My bad. I have looked for my symptoms elsewhere, and I see most notice the white smoke out of the tail pipe. There is no smoke coming from mine, just from the breather house out the pass side wheel well. I do know that I have a leak at the #1 injector, but that may have nothing to do with it as well. it's my understanding that white smoke is burnt oil or water, correct? Does burnt coolant also produce a white-ish smoke?
