Question Odd engine noises only at idle!!!!

If anyone has any input on the sound my engine is making let me know.....Ive worked on gasoline engines since I was 10 but this is my first encounter with a diesel. Idk what sounds are normal and what sounds are abnormal.

I don't hear anything unusual. Sounds like a diesel.

That is due to injection timing. The mechanical timing device operates based on engine speed to provide up to 8 degrees of advance as RPMs rise.

Here is my old 300D, this is what they sound like when its well maintained and adjusted correctly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9JBXWNT0f4

The slight "tinging" sound in your video is most likely one of the two heat shields on the exhaust manifold.

Now if it sounded like this junker, you'd have a problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTZRJSi04Tc

You did not say what year you 300D turbo diesel is?

If it is an older on the Valves need peroidic adjustments.

If the Injectors are original and have been in the Engine for over 150,000 they most likely need to be rebuilt.

The same with the Fuel Injection Pump Timing. Most owners never have it checked.

Its pretty obvious by the video its an 85 Kalifornia emissions. Also, the title of the video is "1985 300d turbo diesel".

I very seldom view videos because I have Dial Up internet. It takes too long for me to open a Video. So I never saw the Vehicle.

Also I have some hearing impairment; so I am not the best one to listen to a recording and make a judgment.

But, in general when you ask a question on a Forum the more accurate info you give the more likely you are to get the answer you desire.
