Need Tranny for my 82 300D

I guess I need to start from the beginning when trying to find a replacement tranny for an 82 300D? Or will any ol' 300D tranny bolt up to my engine? I'm not sure if the engine or the tranny are even the original or if they were from 2 different vehicles (years) all together. I do know that the motor is in perfect condition though and after only a few weeks the tranny has took a dump. I noticed a small "ticking", or "tapping" sound, coming from the tranny. It progressively got louder throughout about 4-5 days time, and so loud it sounds like a jack-hammer at certain RPM's. I was hoping it was something as simple as tightening up a loose flex plate bolt or torque converter bolt. But, to no avail the tranny now slips and doesn't roll the car 50' so I know it's the tranny for sure now.
Do I need to get an engine ID# or something to make sure I get a correct Tranny? Or would a tranny from any 300D from the years 81-85 work? Or what years if not?
And, could that be what could have went wrong with this tranny that is in it? Would an incorrect engine/ tranny match cause a tranny to fail? Or can there actually be an incorrect match?
What could I keep in mind for the next tranny that I get to keep it from going bad (so quickly)?
What would be tapping inside the tranny?
Thank you soooo much for reading and I hope you can help me. Our van is being reposessed and I need to get a tranny in the 300D QUICK! so we can have a family ride again.
How much should I pay for a tranny, per mileage? Or gurantees? Please advise, I need someone's help quick.

300D Turbo
Seems that for my specific vehicle I need a tranny from 81-84 turbo edition. The only thing is that I need to get one that has an electric speedo, not mechanical.

Well, do you have any further info on your transmission and what it's doing? Like, is it leaking? Do you see any puddles that have formed under it? Have you checked the fluid level and condition? That can help determine what happened. So far, I can only think that maybe a band broke. Rare for these transmissions to have problems honestly. Either way, if I remember correctly, you need a 722.3 transmission. I believe the 722.4 WOULD work, but it is weaker then the 722.3, though still not a BAD transmission.

everything was good..

First thing I did when I got it running was check the fluids... Fairly new oil red in color, didn't smell bad, right where the level should be, not leaking... I'm clueless as to what happened to it too. Going to pick up a new tranny tomorrow (Thursday) $600 with a 90 day guarantee. I'll see which one it is, hope it's 722.3...
I plan on rebuilding the one.. How deep into the rebuild is the band you are talking about? And would that definitely make a "KNOCK'ing sound?

WOW

Finally got my fat, lazy a$$ under the car instead of letting a "mechanic" do it, which I am glad I did because if you want it done right you do it yourself, right?..
Ended up being the flex plate. I can tell because there are pieces in the bottom of the bell-housing. Also, there are only 2 of 6 bolts present in the flex plate bolts window. Haven't got the tranny OUT yet though, need another universal socket, broke 2 of them so far trying to get the second starter bolt loose. Now just need a beefier universal.

Oh, and noticed it IS leaking fluid from the housing. Can't tell why that is until I get the tranny out. Hope it's not cracked pump...
