I am looking for references to injection pump timing for engine assembly. I am rebuilding a 617.952 from bottom up. I did not do any thing with the injection pump because they are as confusing to me as an auto tranny. So I am installing it as it was removed. The problem is I did not remove it. Purchased the engine from someone who gave up but had all the parts and machine work done. So I have no idea at what state the pump is (1st Cylinder begin of delivery or not even close). All the references that I have found for timing the pump is attached to the engine with fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel tubing...etc, available. I would like to have everything 'in time' before dropping the engine in.
Align the spline key with the upper left screw. The index mark may NOT be correct, always line with the screw.
(you can NOT use the "bubble" method, it does NOT work)
Set the engine to 24-26*BTDC and install the pump.
You can engine-stand time it with a fuel container.
Pump the primer 30 times after you hear the relief valve vent to evacuate air from the pump (about 60 pumps in total).
Tie the throttle lever to MAXIMUM.
Remove the #1 delivery valve from it's holder.
Move the pump until fuel spills freely from the drip tube then move the pump back until you get 1 drop per second from the tube.
The pump must be installed AFTER the timing chain has been installed onto the crankshaft and timing device sprockets.
