Just bought a 240d. What belt to get?
Just bought a 1978 240d w/ A/C an manual transmission. Then the waterpump belt broke.
Unfortunately the belt completely disappeared on the highway, leaving me without anything to compare.
Got a belt for the waterpump and alternator. Got one from both Aurozone and Oreileys. Both were the same size, and both were too short. And online, there are varying sizes listed, with little explanation of their respective applications.
I got a slightly longer belt (I think 950 mm) than they initially sold me, which got me home, However, it has clearly stretched and would require adjustment of the alternator to most of the way out (is that amount of stretch normal?) I have little faith in Autozone and their janky crap.
How do I know what to get?
BTW, does someone make a serpentine belt conversion kit for these cars, kinda like the old ford V8s?

Time for me to go full newbie:
- Where is the engine s/n located? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the block.
- The engine s/n's got cut off on your pdf's, I think your computer is angry at me...I assume they changed pulleys mid-year, hence my difficulties?
Also, is there a source to locate a new star bolt for tensioning the alternator? Mine is pretty worn and half the teeth wont engage. I heard rumors there is, however my google-fu is at a loss with this car.
Thanks.

My issue is that my EPC data is less forgiving that the dealers who can determine the serial number---you car is just to old for my system and I don't know when the datacard system was established!
