Steering Column angle?

Hello, I bought a rough 1979 300TD last winter, my first Mercedes as well as my first diesel, and I'm learning every time I play with it. I had to drive from Atlanta to Nashville a couple of weeks ago and I decided to have some fun and drive the Mercedes, our first road trip! The car did fine, but with some hours behind wheel, I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before. The steering wheel (and column) are not exactly parallel to the car, but angle slightly from left to right. To put it differently, if you put a long straight edge flat across the face of the steering wheel, it touches the driver door a few inches ahead of where it touches the passenger door. There's no evidence that the car was ever damaged, and the previous owner spent a small fortune having the front steering and suspension restored at a shop that specializes in older Mercedes. Is this by design, or adjustable, or what? Thanks very much.
