1983 300D Turbo Diesel Loud knocking from the rear.
My Mercedes 300D Turbo Diesel has been neglected for the past 20 years and I've picked it up from my father after it's been sitting for a while. However, along with the terrible shaking from the engine. The rust wholes in the floor board and the shock absorber bolts rusting out. A new problem has appeared. Under 15 mph the car runs smoothly. However as soon as you hit 15 and up. If you accelerate a knocking feeling and loud banging occurs. If you let off the gas it doesn't knock and only comes from the rear I can't figure your the problem
(Short version)
Loud knocking from rear during driving above 15mph, especially during acceleration. Any ideas?

Almost certainly a bad CV joint, look for new or rebuilt drive axles on E-Bay etc.
Look under the back of the car, if any of the rubber drive axle boots are ripped open, that's your problem .

Just repaired this......
I had the same problem on my '83. Replacing transmission mount helped some, but the real problem was the driveshaft carrier bearing. It;'s an inexpensive part, but a PITA to replace - and to get centered. There are some excellent write up on this on some of the other forums.

Driveshaft Center Bearing / Support
When mine failed it only made a soft thumping sound when I eased off the accelerator, no loud noise at all in spite of about 13MM / 1/2" of side slop .
