One off '82 230E fuel pipe?

Hello. There's a metal pipe on my car and it seems like maybe it's someone's attempt to solve a problem. Nowhere can I find a pic, reference, parts diagram, forum post or youtube video that shows this pipe. All other W123's seem to have only two pipes attached to the banjo union on the fuel filter. I'd like to delete it but I'm not sure it's safe to. I haven't stripped the rear end fuel system down to it's component parts yet so I can't tell you whether it goes into the accumulator or the damper, but there seems to be a small [maybe 10mm diameter] in line cylinder in this pipe as it travels back between the fuel filter and accumulator. Sorry for the bad pic, but the gold blob is where the pipe has been brazed. Maybe a repair or where it was brazed into the system.

If you've any ideas I'd be extremely grateful.
GK

For anyone who might have the same conundrum, I got to the bottom of it after someone told me Mercedes were known to use whatever parts were available. I began a search today for the fuel systems of all other models produced in the W123 era. This setup with three pipes in the fuel filter banjo union is standard W116.

"Use whatever parts were available" was much the same informal policy at the Harley factory in the 70s.
