280e Drive shaft inner boot / Grease or fluid

Hi Peeps - i noticed what looked like an oil leak on my drive, at the rear of the car and thought it might have been the differential.
However it turns out its a split boot (where the drive shaft goes into the differential.
At first i was a little perplexed why 'oil' would be coming and out and not grease? But apparently gear oil is used as opposed to grease, to pack the driveshaft?

When i come to replace this boot - do i have to replace with gear oil? Or can I use a grease?

Thank you.
