W123 300d 4speed manual linkage issues
Hi everyone
Hope someone has some avice for me!
Have recently taken over this car and I am slowly getting round to sorting out the worst of the issues !
This is an issue where the gear lever is quite sloppy and it never really feels "tight".
Occasionaly it will just lock itself into a gear and its impossible to change gear when driving.
This normally happens if I have driven over a bump or a hole in the road. This leads me to think its the linkage from the gear selector lever to the gear box.
I have seen several posts aout this problem.
Does anyone think this is my issue and they may have recently refurbished their linkage and be able to give me more pointers?
Does anyone know if the linkage is the same as the 240D?
This is the diagram and it seems that items 26, 41 and 44 are the parts that wear.
Has anyone got any advice for me, please?
I dont really want to take it all apart, then have to wait weeks to source and get the parts. Rather order the parts and the take it apart and put it all back together before I forget how it came apart, lol.
Thanks in advance
Rob

Usually its just the link grommets that fail. If memory serves me right the part number is 1159920210. Can you hear the "clicking" sound when you move the gear lever? If so the grommets are definitely worn. Quite easy to replace, and they can cause the links to rub against each other, impacting the gear change. It seems the part on your schematic would be number 152.

Hi
Thanks for the reply on my other post and here, much appreciated.
Thats really interesting, I have not read that anywhere.
Will definately check that out first. Im guessing that there are three of them, one on each connecting rod.
Ive managed to locate the other parts, I will have a look now for that part
Seems that this is the part?
It feels like the connecting rods are locked together somehow, rather than just wear in the gear slector area.
Are they easy enough to remove and replace? No special tools?
If it turns out to be the selector linkage, have you ever had to do those?
I really do appreciate any help.
I havent had this old Mercedes long, but already I love it
Thanks

Hi
I just checked the part number you suggested, which is the picture above.
According to the parts diaram I have, the part number could be 000 992 05 10
Does that look like it?
Black or white?
Thanks
