desirability of a 1985 W123 300 D Turbo Diesel
My Aunt has a 1985 300D Turbo Diesel. It has been parked in her garage for 16 years in san francisco. I was asked to see if I could get it started so I went over and changed oil and the filters. I had also put in new gas and a new battery. On the first crank, it started right up. The body and interior are in great shape. The seats has had seat covers since new, so no tears at all. There was no rust that I found. The right rear passenger window was the only thing that didn't seem to work. There was just a bit of an oil leak in the engine. It drove great, but you could tell the tires had gotten a flat spot from sitting with no air in them. The brakes were good. It now has 111k miles on the odometer and my aunt and uncle are the original owners. I know these cars are pretty much indestructible, but how is the desirability and what would the price point of the car be? Im thinking abougt 9k?

My car wouldn't be worth much hre - maybe C$4k, despite being an amazing car, I doubt many would want to pay much more than your $9k for a car that has been sitting for 16 years. It will need money spent on it. First of all tires, but also many other rubber parts. Brakes may seem OK, but they should be checked out. Rubber hoses should be replaced and eventually caliper seals may need attention. If fuel has been sitting in tank for 16 years, surprised it started. Fuels system should be emptied, flushed and new filters installed. Same for rad and cooling system. Check rad hoses too. How is A/C? If needed you should allow for replacement. Presumably battery replaced just to start the car?
I would get the car if you like it, but allow for another 3 or 4 thousand in upgrades before it will be a daily driver.

Yes. haha. I did put diesel. I just say gas as a general term. I don't plan on keeping it, and no one in the family wants it. I am a mechanic and I went through the car. As I mentioned, it has been sitting in a garage in San Francisco and it was climate-controlled so the hoses didn't seem to degrade much at all. Tires shouldn't be much of an expense for these cars as they don't need ZR rated tires and I do have a tire machine. We will be selling the car locally only by putting it on a local site like Craislist. I guess 9K should be a reasonable price.
