Converting a 300E 4Matic into a 300D 4Matic 5-spd

Hello - I currently drive an '84 190D 2.2. The car is awesome but I want to upgrade. An ideal car would be the W124 300D 4-Matic 5-spd between 1986 to 1988. Unfortunately, this car was never available in North America (neither the W124 250D 5-spd)

What I'm thinking in doing is to transfer my 2.2 Diesel engine into a W124 4-Matic, and add the 5-spd transmission of the W201.

My question is: Would the above be possible?
(assuming that cost is not a problem).

How does the 4-Matic system work? Is this system a fuel guzzler?
If the answer is yes, I'd keep the W124 as a Diesel with 5-spd
(With the 2.2 engine it would be more or less the equivalent of a W124 200D, which also never made it to North America)

Thanks in advance

Carlos

Why don't you just buy my '86 300E 5-speed and swap motors, then sell the 190 to get most of your money back?

WOW - Heatherton, I am interested. I know that a few 5-spd W124s made it to these shores. Let me know details please. You can write me at kam6@telusplanet.net. Thanks!
