Speaker sizing

What size speakers will fit in the front and rears for the W124. I was shopping through crutchfield.com and they don't have a listing for what sizes will fit.

i remember hearing that 4" fit in the front and 5" fit in the back ( i think you wil need to do minor cutting to get 5.25 to fit... i forgot, anybody want to check this? but see, the exact fit is not in inches, they are something like 130 mm and something else. but those two sizes should fit.

4" in the front will fit ..just flush them down. It will fit,but they will fit. in the back...you can cut out the rear deck(made of carbon wood with a utility knife) measure correct so that they will fit snug. kinda close to the back of the r

The measurement is metric.

DAng! I totally bought the wrong speakers. I bought a pair of 5.25" and a pair of 6.5" speakers. I thought i heard someone said those are the measurements. But i guess i read the post wrong. Thanks! I guess the 6.25" are for the door panels which i dont have. 5.25" will work in the front and back with a few modifications right?

In any w124, I think 4" speakers in the front are the only choice without massive cutting/trimming.

In my CE's rear deck, we cut out and fit 6" (6.5" ?) Diamond Audio speakers.

Also, mounted solidly to that rear deck are my two 8 inch subs in a custom box. (somewhat centered between the two 6" diamonds)

Tweeters are flush mounted right in front of the front door latch.

Amp, Nav dvd player and cap are mounted in right side wheel well, with custom cover.

Bottom line, the back lid will allow some leeway for size, but I think the fronts are going to be 4" at best.

For what it's worth...in my set up, the 4" speakers carry about 400hz up to around 4000hz, with tweeters picking up frequency above that, and the 6"ers pick up from about 85hz to 400hz, with the subs responsible for everything below 85hz. This way, the 4" speakers are not trying to reproduce base at all.

I always bi amp / tri amp systems to allow a more open sound from the tweeters..since their amp does not reproduce ANY base.

The above described system is powering the newest Alpine Nav system - 872+310. The pull out screen fits nicely - whereas it looked like it stood no chance of fitting.

Well in my CE I fit the following with some minor cutting...

In the dash I fit a 5.25"
in the doors I fit a 6.5"
In the rear deck I am cutting it to fit a 6.5" when I get a chance as well as cutting 2 more hole for 2 6.5" subs for my 3 way setup.

I have the 3 way setup in the front and they sound great to me. the rear will be added fill for it, and the 12" sub in small box in the trunk takes up fairly little trunk space and pounds more than I even need it to.

otherwise you can fit a 5.25" in the rear factory speaker pods with some trimming with a dremel...

Not sure if the sedan is different in sizes than the coupe in the rear through.

For the dash I had to do some very minor trimmming of the speaker hole to fit 5.25", and I removed the plastic bars going across the back of the speaker grill to give them more room to move. Works well. and the 5.25" speakers you have to choose carefully. I used infiity reference seperates in the front.

Ashman,

I envy those 5s in your dash and WANT to replicate. If you ever have the speakers out, please take a picture or 3? Any additional input would be appreciated, as I would end up printing your comments for my installer.

HMmm. So 5.25" is the best i can go then... For my setup i got the Alpine IVA D310 head unit for the main source. For the mids im returning the Alpine type R's and getting Infiniti all the way around for the mids. As for the amp and subs Im going to use one of my Kicker for the mids and the other Kicker to push my 1 12". The subs and amp are going to be Temp untill i get a new system. So is this the best i can do. Front dash= 5.25", Panel custom fit= 6.5", Rear Custom 6.5"?

RHW I will get some pics as soon as I have time. I literally only cut a minor amount. my air saw worked great and was able to trim it just enough to squeeze int he infinities. I also cut off two of the infinity screw points and the speakers just squeezed in there barely.

Anything other than an infinity reference 5.25" seperate will be a tough call. the magnet is a concern as well, and believe me when I saw it just barely fit in there with the dept and size of the magnet. the basket on the infinities is the perfect shape to fit in there with the minor trimming tot he cutout of the dash.

Those are real helpful comments ASHMAN...
I think the huge magnet on a 5" diamond woofer might not be easy to cut into the car, but when I install a stereo in the 300e, it will get 5" Infinity References in the front.

Ashman, your 6.5's in the doors did you mount them in the factory enclosure? if so did you cut the enclosure at all? thanks
