I can tell you the UK dimensions, which I think may be the same as in the US of A.
Pre facelift - up to 1992/3?
15" 6.5J Steel wheel & 8 hole Alloy rims - all 48mm offset
Later W124's:
15" 6.5J Steel wheel - 49mm offset,
8 Hole Alloys - 44mm offset
15 hole Alloys - 48mm offset
In my opinion, the later 8 hole alloys (44mm) give the car a slightly ungainly look - protruding a little too far out giving the car too wide a track width, but that's just my opinion.
Over the pond, where you do like your "wide wheels", MB may well have fitted 7" rims as standard (in the UK these were only fitted to the later 4matics).
