95 E320 Wag, Erratic Turn Signals/Int Wipers
Hi all,
Great community you have here.
My wife picked up a clean 95 E320 Wagon. The one thing we need to address ASAP is the turn signals (also related to intermittent wipe). They only work sometimes, and initially, I thought it was just the turn signals (and hazard), but on a recent trip in the rain, I found out the intermittent wipers don't work at the same time the turn signals don't work. The 2nd and 3rd wiper settings work fine.
So aside from her almost getting killed going into some turns, everything is just dandy.
Any ideas as to what I should look for? Take to the dealer? Fix myself? Anyone hear of similar problems on this car?
Lovely car by the way. I never would have thought we'd be MB owners. Sure beats what she was driving.
Many thanks for your time,
Marc

first thing I would do is check all fuses. sometimes they can have a tiny crackt hat is not visible. I would just buy all new fuses and replace them. thats what I did when I bought may car and havent had an issue with the fuses.
The other thing is that it may simply be a weak bulb, or a loose ground somewhere.
It could be that the intermittent wipers and the turn signals share the same relay unit, and that may be the issue.
My opinion is to replace all the fuses, and replace all the bulbs with new ones. it doesn't hurt.

Thanks Ashman for the pointers. I'll be sure to run through them. I've also found the following regarding the hazard switch being the culprit, but no explanation given. Anyone heard of this or had the same problem?

After having found glancing references on the web about the hazard switch, a search here turned up:
Hazard Switch
And I'm glad I searched further. Being that it also affects my intermittent wiper settings, it looks to be this problem.
Wiper/Combo Relay
So if you have this problem, make sure to see if it is also is affecting other functions besides the turn signals/hazard lights.
Thanks again, all!

Success!
We drove down the the MB dealer, and they didn't stock the combo relay, but could get it for $80. I knew it was the problem as I found it an wiggled it around and reproduced the problem. I took it out and had the neighbor re-solder the joints for all the pins and bingo, no more funkiness. The solder job took all of 2 minutes.

Open the fuse box on the firewall, driver's side. There it's in the cavity behind the fuse box. Remove the 6 screws to pop that cover off. The one on the outside corner closest to the driver is the trickiest, but it's still a super easy job. There are several relays in there, but it's the easiest one to get to, and I believe the biggest.

The part number on mine was 201 821 00 47 but apparently has been replaced by a part number 201 821 02 47.
Anyway, that's what you're looking for. It's easy to pop open. You'll see that the board will wiggle a little on the pin connections. A simple re-solder did the trick.
