A/C Problems

Hey all I am having problems with the A/C in my E 320. The problem is the Air will not get cold. I can see the compressor running and I am seeing the gas running through the peep site. No matter what I Have the cabin setting on its stays about the same temp. Where can I start?

Thanks
Brian

The system has a full charge. Got any other ideas? This just started all at once.

did you charge it yourself or did you have someone do it? if you overcharge it you can actually cause it not to blow cold. if a tech did it you can always blame them for the job. i'd just bring it to get it checked if you can't spot anything.

its very hard to diagnose a sytem without having it right there, especially since all we know is that it has gas but blows hot. thats like saying my car has gas but wont run.

it could be your expansion valve (i think this is the culprit!!)
compressor
clutch
condensor
or any number of other things.

This would be my guess as well, but typically if everything was fine and your expansion valve is the culprit, your compressor is likely to be succumbing to the black death. If the system has not been open recently, it would make this more likely. If you are interested in doing your own work, get a manifold set and check the pressures, this will give some valuable data about the health of your system.

your sight glass should be clear. If you are seeing "clouds" or bubbles in the sight glass then you are low on freon. you can buy a yellow jacket freon gauge and a schrader valve hose for about $20 and check the pressure on the low side. If you have overcharged the system, it will blow cold, (assuming overcharge is the only problem) but the car will surge badly and as the compressor short cycles on and off and eventually the compressor will lock up. Do you have R-12 or R-134?

There is R-134 in the system and my gauge says its full of gas.

Hi Brian,

I had a similar problem to my 190E, the problem was that the controlling valve/switch between the hot and cold settings was broken for one side of the vehicles which only caused hot air to blow. Now assuming that the W124 has the same exterior a/c mechanicals this could also be the problem.

Cheers,

Jon
