Help: '91 300E - blower regulator problem?!

I've a '91 300E and all of a sudden the air stopped blowing .... the A/C and heater work - cold air blows when I'm driving not while I'm stopped .... looks like the blower stopped working - so, no air ...... I've checked the fuse and it looks good .......

I took it to the mechanic and here is his estimate:

Blower - $310
Fan Speed Regulator - $374

Labor - Blower - $250
Labor - Regulator - $300

Total = $1,234

Any comments ..... does this diagnosis seem correct .......... do the prices look right ...... you think I can get the above parts on the internet for cheaper?

Thanks very much.

Well I am not sure about his diagnosis but... I am wondering if Both parts are bad? Kinda sounds like he is just "throwing" parts at it, if you ask me. I am not even sure where the Fan Speed Regulator is, but for $300 in labor to replace it, sounds like it's in the crankcase :p

I am sure you can get the parts cheaper off the net. But will he install them, of even warranty the work at all? Most shops wont. That's like taking bacon & eggs from Your fridge to IHOP and having them Cook em up.

Mmmm bacon

Good luck though,

Ron

Don't know what your level of experience is, but blower fan can be replaced in an afternoon if you know what you are doing. It does involve working in some pretty tight spaces. You basically remove the windshield wiper assembly and it's underneath that. I wouldn't attempt it unless you're a pretty good mechanic though. Small hands are a plus too.

lots of cars
1,300 to fix the a/c? I rather do it the ghetto way and pop open a window. Or you can go to a salvage yard and buy the part and install it yourself. Ebay too has a lot of blower motors.

LnkPrkSoldier, I would check and see if you A/C compressor clutch is working. Find the A/c compressor, on the front of it is an electro magnetic clutch. When you turn on the a/c the clutch energizes and locks, thus turning the compressor with the rotation of the fan belt. when you turn the a/c off, the clutch dis-engages and allows the belt to free wheel. If the a/c is off, you can look at the front of the compressor and the center of it will be stationary. If your a/c is on, the center should be spinning. This might be your problem. If the a/c is working some of the time, then that would lead me to believe the problem is electrical, not mechanical.

LnkPrkSoldier, Also check your fuses. The ends of them seem to corrode and intefere with the electrical connection. Being new Benz owner I have been reading the MBworld archives, and have read this as a fix for the a/c problem your describing, more then once.

HTH,

Ron
