Question Another tranny question

I would like to replace the automatic transmission in my 86 300E with a manual one. Anyone ever done this? Is it possible??

The existing tranny slips out of gear just after attempting to go into 3rd. I have to put it into neutral and then back into gear to keep it going. It also enagages roughly putting it into reverse. As long as I do not go above 40 mph its ok. Otherwise, the car is in great shape and I really enjoy it. It has been sitting in my garage crying for help for the past year. I thought it would be "fun" to have a manual transmission IF it can be done without piles of money.

Any advice, recommendations would be most appreciated.

Well it might take a small pile of money to do it. You would need the manual trans, shifter assembly and maybe a console for a manual. Then there is the need for a clutch pedal. I'm not sure if you can just add the pedal or need a complete pedal assembly. Also do they use a clutch cable or hydraulic setup? You might need a different driveshaft & trans mount too. Also do the manual cars have a different real axle ratio? The existing trans cooler will need to be capped off.

Anything can be done if you really want to. In the next year or two I will be buying a newer 00-03 Benz. When I do, I am thinking about a Turbo Buick engine swap for my 300. That will need a little pile of money too

Have fun!

You would need an entire donor car to do it. I believe.

That and the driveshaft I believe too will be needed among many other things..

You can do it but your car won't be any faster with a manual than it is with the automatic. Just save your money and rebuild the auto transmission.
