Alignment issue with staggered wheels?

I upgraded my ’87 300e with staggered wheels, they’re AMG rims 17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 rear with 225/45-17 and 245/40-17 tires. After having some suspension work done, I took the car in for an alignment. The mechanic said he could not set the alignment until I brought him the original wheels, which I did. Does this mean I will need to keep my original 15” wheels just so that I can get alignment done in the future?

Funny thing how Mercedes did not publish alignment specs for staggered wheels!

I'd find another guy to do the alignment. hell check with the mb dealer. They probably won't charge too much to do the alignment.

The alignment if done with the original wheels may be different with the new wheels.

I myself have never heard of anybody claiming they needed the smaller wheels to do an alignment.
