It smells like.....gas

For the past few days, whenever I enter my car (92 400E, 170k mi), it smells VERY strongly of gasoline. The smell goes away as I drive, but it comes back even if the car is off for only ten minutes. The trunk smells of gasoline too. There is no odor from the engine area. There are no drips on the ground. Also, you can't smell the gas anywhere outside of the car. It's not until you open a door....

I checked the fuel cap, and the area is dry and the o-ring is good. What/where could the smell be coming from? This problem happened very suddenly; it's not like the car gradually started to smell of gas over time...one day it was just a full-force gas smell.

Tomorrow I'll be removing the carpeting in the trunk so I can get a look at the gas tank and see if there are any visible signs of a leak. Do you guys have any advice as to what this problem might be?

Thanks

check the gas cap. it could need a new one.

I have read on other forums this can be a cause of it.

Okay, so today I pulled out the carpeting in the trunk to look at the gas tank. Much to my dismay, there was a small puddle of gas directly under the tank. I found that the leak was not coming from the cap/filler neck or the levelsender unit. To make a long story short, I removed the gas tank from the car, and found that gas was leaking out the bottom seam of the tank. Kinda strange how it happened so abruptly. So now I have a car that is out of commission and a leaking gas tank.

Does anyone know where I could source a new/used gas tank?

Thanks

....the only choice would be to get one from a wreckers...unusual problem...recycled tank will probably be OK...Has your car ever been in a collision?

Does anyone know if all w124 gas tanks are the same? (except 500e) I'm just wondering if I could put in a tank from an 88 or a 90 300e and have it work properly in my 92.

Thanks

Fuel Tanks

The 300E fuel tank is identical to the 400E. The 500E was a little bigger in volume, but will still fit.

Best Regards,
