Coolant problems - Overheating 230E

Hi, i made a trip last weekend (2 hours in a hilly terrain) and i have to stop because i see that the temp needle goes to the red. Of course i stoped. Ounce i was back in the city i change the coolant reservoir, because the other has a little leak, the problem seems to be solved but now in slow traffic the needle goes up to 100° and then goes down to 80°. This is normal?
Ounce a week i have to refill a little the reservoir with coolant but the car dont have any leaks. Advanced thanks.

I don't know but I guess it would work if you change the thermostat valve to a one thats opens at lower temp. than the one you have.

did you check the additional fans you have if they work or not !!

see what other guys say

Hi Diego,
the thermostat is cheap, you can buy it at the MB-dealer or elsewhere. You just need the replacement with right temperature value to open.
I'm not so familiar with the 230E 4 cyl. But the main fan between the engine and the radiatior has some control to engage as required from the temp. rise of he coolant. For the 6-cyl. it is silicon oil filled fluid clutch which engaged more and more as higher the temperature, and increases speed of the fan. The 4cyl. may have something different, or even an electric fan????

lots of cars
i think you should go to the 190e forum but i had a 230E here in california. check your water pump and the fan is electric and does not use a clutch like the m103 so make sure the switch is turning on the fan or jump it. it will run rough with the fan on all the time but will keep it cool and the front aux fan should turn on too so check that.
