your best bet would be to put a 400E engine in it, or a E420 engine, i dont think a 500E will fit.

Anything is possible but unless you want an engineering project the best way is to sell it and buy a 500E.

400E vs 500E engine. both M119,...

(essentially) same block and heads. slightly different intakes. should fit the same

you can make your own 500E by using the 5 liter M119 engine from an R129 or W140. (power wont be the same as the genuine thing has more.) but you probably wont be able to duplicate some of the bracing and reinforcement that porsche designed into the 500E. brakes and suspension can be lifted wholesale from a donor car or your friendly mercedes dealer.

but then why did they have to cut and elongate the engine bay?

I believe any structural changes made by Porsche were made for strength -

The differences between the E420/400E 124 m119 and the 500E M119 is Intake, and I think stroke (different crank), and of course different cams.

Between the 500SL M119 and 500E, I have heard only the intake is different.

Anyone have any more specific info?

If you can afford to have a 400E/E420 engine placed in a 300E coupe, then you probably should invest in a car with that motor in it already. If you have the technical no how and skill to do the swap, then you're probably smart enough to realize you should just buy a 400E/E420.

I agree with the above, with the exception that there was no E420/400E or 500E coupe.

So if your goal is for an m119 powered coupe, guess you would have to make it

Virtually anything is possible, given an unlimited checkbook. An M120 V12 has been shoehorned into a W124 previously.
