my 1989 300E Rear Shocks

I need to replace my rear shocks in my 1989 300E any one got some pointers on the procedure? I have searched around and it looks like bilstein shocks are the way to go..Mercedes wants $450 to do the Job and after market mechanic wants 400 to use bilstein...I can get the shocks for around 200 for the pair but am not clear on whats involved in installing them..Thanks..Dave

If you have a decent set of tools and are comfortable working on cars, it is definitely a DIY job. Based on some good advice from other members, this is what has worked for me: Jack up one side of the car and remove the wheel to gain access to the lower bolt. Keep in mind that the rear shock is what limits the maximum wheel travel, so before you remove anything, place a small jack under the control arm to take the tension off of the shock. To get to the top bolt, remove the side panels in the trunk. In my case, the top nut was ceased and it would spin along with the shock. I had to cut it out; it was a perfect excuse to buy a grinder, a 10 second cutting job. Any suspension job I take on, small jack and axle stands are indispensable.

Good luck.
