Dave, first, make sure you have frech transmission oil.
second: You can try and adjust the vacuum activated transmission modulator.
On the left side of the transmission (under the car) there is a red plastic cover, about 2.5in in diameter.
inside this cover, you will find the modulator adjustment key.
Turning clockwise will harden the shift, anticlockwise will make the shift smoother. Go with very small increments(like 5 minutes on a clock)
