Dumb Question about a 1990 300CE-24

Does anyone know where the oil filter is?

I've got the oil drained out and cannot find the filter, I know pretty lame. I got a service manual on CD from E-bay and it does not even show the oil filter anywhere.

Also I am looking for an ignition contol unit for the car as well. I it part number 012-545-2032, I have been looking for one for about a year. I need to get me car to shift into 5th gear.

Cheers,

Jake

I just bought a 91 CE. The filter is were it usually is on the 124...Left Hand side of the engine near the firewall. On my car it is not a typical replacable metal screw on cartridge. It is a silver grey can with a screw on lid. You unscrew the lid and remove and replace a paper element. There is an O ring for the lid that should come with your new paper element. Taking the air cleaner off makes it easier to get to. To take the air cleaner off you DO NOT remove the nuts on the top of the air cleaner. The entire plastic thing is held to the intake manifold with two nuts and a bolt. One is near the thermostat housing, one is near the firewall by the valve cover and the bolt is on the left hand side of the air cleaner...it is kind of underneath the air cleaner and hard to see. After you take these off you disconnect the intake hose and the air cleaner will lift off...it is a snug fit around the throttle body or whatever they call it on a mercedes so you have to pull up with some force....good luck!

Did mine today. There must be some special Mercedes wrench that fits over the ribs in the lid that probably makes it easy to get the top off. I used a rubber strap wrench and tapped gently on the lid with a screwdriver and it loosened.

I did find it in my CD service manual section 18-0020. 18-1100 shows a detailed explosion drawing of the whole filter and housing

I did almost the samething to get the cap off the filter housing. There was no way I could budge it by hand.

Yep,thats true.I have a 5 speed auto. The 300ce-24 came to australia fully optioned up as standard. The gear selector has 2-3-D on it,then directly across from drive is 5th gear, this allows you to go from 4th-5th,or 5th-4th,as a left flick or right flick. 5th gear is designed to only cut in at 80kms per hour,it cuts about 500rpm's off the tacko, good for longer legs, and a bit of tiptronic type of fun.
Just for a bit of trivia,i was told by the head mechanic at the main benz dealer here in Perth, that the 300ce-24 was the first car to be offered with a 5 speed auto,in the world.I found that hard to believe, but i think it's true.
