Engine Stays On

Hello Chaps

I have a E300D and when I take out the key the engine stays on? Any Ideas what it may be?
Stop Solenoid?

Thank You in advance!

How do you turn your car off?
Is the engine on when you take the key out in the on position or when you put it to the off position?

on some of the older diesels, if there is a vaccum leak the car wont shut off. not sure if this applies to your model, but it is something to check. I think all the car's vacuum lines are interconnected for central locking etc.

You could probably even google "Runaway Diesel"

The vacuum pump is most likely the problem (as already mentioned). This happed to my dad's 300sdl when I was on road trip. I'm sure the engine is similarly designed- my dad's had a shut-off lever under the hood... it was in the center of the compartment, and says "STOP" on a red button. push that thing to cut the engine.

My dad's vacuum pump was shot... Another symptom is that the power brakes went out. I don't know if these two systems are linked the same way on the w124 though...

EDIT: and to tack something on to Alon's post... when my dad's vacuum pump went out, the door locks still worked... So they must've been on separate pumps.
