AC question
Just bought a '87 300D turbo. Previous owner tells me occasionally the AC will quit while you are driving. What he does to restart it is spray the compressor clutch with brake cleaner. He says this usually works. The AC has been checked by the local shop and the air gap is within spec. and they can find nothing else wrong. Any other ideas. BTW it has been converted to 134a.

My 95 E320 had similar problem! especially when car or weather is hot ac will not work when I strated the car. However it'll work if I restart the engine. I replaced ac relay, ac push button unit and problem still there. I then replaced the compressor it finally fixed the problem. What happened was compressor had a slow leak and caused compressor clutch to slip and when this happened rpm sensor for compressor will shut off compressor therefore no ac. Have your tech install dye see if they can verify compressor leaking

I agree. If what the previous owner says is true, then replacement of the compressor will solve the problem. There may be a slow leak at the shaft seal, which then deposits refrigerant oil onto the clutch. The resulting slippage will cause the a/c to cut out until next startup.

Slmilar symptoms
Thank you for the above information. I've had the same problems / symptoms with my 1993 300E. I had it in the shop twice and they couldn't fix it. They said it "MAY" be the compressor. Is my car Factory Equipped with R-134.? I am going to replace the compressor myself when I fiquire out which model compressor I have. My car is a late 1993 3.2 Engine. I need to drive the car daily, so I can't pull the old compressor until I have the replacement on hand.Ebay shows 3-possibles, Nippon Denso 10Pa17C, 10P15C,10PA15C. Tomorrow I'm checking for a slipping clutch. Thanks Again. I'll let you know how I make out.

I'm not sure which refrigerant is in your car. The best way to tell is by either a decal under the hood that states which refrigerant is in the car, or by looking at the low-side and high-side ports on the system. An r12 system will use schraeder valves, like a tire valve stem. An r134 system will use something that looks like shop air line quick disconnects. Is there any chance your car may have been converted?
