Question Car hesitates when given gas

I'm a new member but I've been reading all the messages for a long time. Now i have a problem so I'm writing in. I have a 88 260 with about 150 -175 k on it over all it's great. My problem is when it's given gas it really sputters for a while until I get going around 20 mph then she runs great. I just had a full tune up I changed everything on it with all bosch parts. I think it's the fuel pump but I would like some more info. thanks

I'm not sure about the fuel pump, because either it works or it dont. But what could be a problem are leaking injection valves, either the individual valves, or the "cold start valve" above the manifold. (blue electrical socket) The problem appears when too much fuel is either in the manifold or in one or more of the cylinders, which causes the fuel/air mixture being too heavy and reluctant to ignite. If the extra fuel is burnt (>20mph) then everything appears ok.

Is your problem occur only when the car is cold ? Do you encounter difficult cold start ?

My previous car, a SAAB which also uses the Bosch engine management system, had similar problem and very difficult starting when cold. My mechanic told me it was a loosen plug for the Negative Temperature Coefficient sensor (don't know what it is:p). The problem was fixed by re-plugging the sensor.

Good Luck.

Hi Tazo,
what you described in the SAAB is pretty much the same for the Mercedes. There are some temperature sensors to control the cold start periode which might cause the problem if defect or connections being open. You'll find those temperature sensors on the top right side along the engine block. You can check the plugs being off. You can can also check the resistance of the sensors against ground. If they are short circiuted (no resistance to ground, they need to replaced and the problem might be solved. Sometimes (especially for the twinsensor at the far end of the motor block) the wires are broken and there is no function anymore.
Good luck finding the devil, but as you understand it's hard to do remote diagnosis'.

Hi bamberger_1,

It's not my car encountering the problem. Anyway, your advice is very useful and I learn something from you.

Do you know where the fuel pump relay is? My car is W124 3.0l in line six. I want to check that relay. Thanks.

It should be behind the plastics behind the battery There you will find i think 3 relays where one is the fuelpump.

The fuel pump relay sits behind the battery and a (flimmsy) plastic cover. As the other poster said, you'll find 2 relays (black blocks) one is A/C (KLIMA) the other is the fuel pump relay. But unfortunately there is not much to repair or check, since it's a complex electronic board only.
