I am thinking of selling my 1992 400E. I would like some input as to its value. 1992 400E
102,000 miles
Texas car
Black Pearl / Black Leather Interior
Alpine CD/MP3/XM
New Tires
New A/C (Evaporator,etc..)
New Window Motors
Recent transmission service
Factory European Headlight Upgrade
Clear Corners
Very Very clean, inside and out.
Took the entire interior out and cleaned like new
Master Cylinder being replaqced tomorrow.
Very good running car

I have put about $3,500 in it in the last 6 months.
Opinions are welcome.

Nice car. But it's worth only a little more than you've put into it in the last six months. Used Mercedes are simply not a hot commodity right now and probably never will be again.

Oh they will be... They're classics. But, yeah, right now it's probably not worth much more then what you put into it. Keep it! What car is better that doesn't cost more then $35,000?

i would say 8.5K at the most.

i just bought a 92 400e with 160k miles for 4 grand.

Thanks guys. I will probably hang on to it. Nice car - drives great, but I need to buy a truck in the next few weeks. Guess I am back to a three car garage.

Anyone have any input on why the rear brakes suddenly have locked up on me? Mechanic says it is a broke master cylinder - others say simply clean the abs sensor...????

SNSMBS - Cool page. I am inspired to keep the car. What do you guys know about lowering / shocks / etc....

I see you put new shocks on your car. Big difference? I ahve these "knocking" sounds coming from my front end when I hit bumps. Bushings?

Also, any opinions on wet sanding the car to get rid of the scratches, blemishes....etc. I have buffed and buffed - hides them, but not enough.

Shocks were actually really easy and it made a definite improvment... as long as you got the right tools. According to the Mercedes W124 Bible, the stock shocks should be replaced anyways after 50,000 miles. My car being at 116k really needed them. The rear 2 were totally dead and same with the front right. Terrible ride!

I had a shop do the rear two, because I heard from people it was harder, and I ain't no mechanic. So, I had my mechanic friend help me with the front 2. Pretty easy... we just jacked the car up, put it on stands... and took the wheels off, and from there we only had 3 bolts to turn, on each, to get the old ones out and put the new ones in.

I spent less then $200(brand new) on the shocks and I couldn't be happier!! Im not trying to build a race car, so I was over getting like some thousand dollar Bilsteins.

And as far as dropping your car goes( I want to do that soon too) I believe you just buy smaller springs, get a spring compressor and put them in.
Or you can do it the old fashioned way... Use a blow torch to heat the springs up and jump on your car until it "sinks" a little. <= Def not the route Im going.

How did you take your seats out? I want to do that and steam cleam my rugz.

four bolts per seat, very easy.

oh yeah, the electrical plugs were a ***** to get back on.

400E: one of the best all time rides
 

The 400E has been called one of the best all time rides of MB. Of course the 500E is better but at how much more $$$$. A car with ALL the paperwork always commands a higher price. A low mileage 400E, well under 75,000, can be priced $10,000 to $15,000. and move up another $10,000 for a perfect 500E. These prices I found in The Star. The more the miles and less paperwork the lower the price. Considering the cars will run up against 200,000 miles with no problems assuming excellent maintenance they are good buys. Keep us posted on your car. You have one of the classic colors, black, silver being the other one most in demand. I'm looking for a 400E, silver 1st, black 2nd with VERY low miles. Jus remembered another place to find beautiful cars: SL Newsletter has a section for cars other than SL's. usually they are owned by true MB pilots. Anal type owners that also have the money to spend on repairs.

I paid $7250 for my '93 400E with 74k on the clock. One owner garage queen, too. I was very pleased as I had expected to pay $8k-$10k if I found a nice one.

Thats a deal!!! Nice looking car.
