1992 300e 10mpg!

I recently purchased a 1992 300e california car with 145k. Love the car, runs smooth, strong, dependable, but it drinks fuel at an alarming rate. I dont drive it hard at all. I should be seeing twice the milage that Im now getting.

The only indicator that something is amiss is with the starting. it usually takes 2 trys to start if the car has sat for more then an hour. On the first try it'll fire up, but die immediately, like it is fuel starved. the second try and it fires up smooth as can be.

It seems to me that I'm not holding fuel pressure. I was thinking fuel presure regulator, but it was suggested to me that it could be the fuel distributer. Can anyone tell me how to diagnose this?

Also, I've seen wildy different prices on fuel distributers for this car. Ranging from $450 for a rebuilt bosch with 12 mth warrantee, to almost $1800. Does anyone have experience with the rebuilts?

lots of cars
If your in california i can maybe source some parts for you. Have you tried looking on ebay for parts? You need to go to a good indie mechanic to figure this out. It may be your cold start valve, OVP relay, EHA valve, Fuel pressure regulator, or maybe your engine is running too rich. I think on a 92 a check engine light or something like that should turn on?...You should also do a test on the fuel injectors because sometimes they leak..

you rock YNVDIZ!! I've got an appointment with an indie in the morning to diagnose the issue, and then I'll be in the market for some parts.

I love the car, but seriously, what happened to the days of fuel pump, fuel filter, and off you go?

Oh wells, if it was that easy then I wouldnt have anything to do on weekends.

Welcome to the world of MB. You might also want to check the Oxygen sensor. A new one can improve fuel economy if the old one is worn out.

Bad injectors?

I'm running in to the same starting problem, but I think I might have leaky injectors. After the car has been sitting for a while Sunday I'll pull some plugs and see how much gas has accumulated. I've heard the injectors are troublesome with the KE Jetronic systems.

are you in southern california?

If so, and need a recommendation for a great mechanic, I got a guy for you. he won't steer you wrong, and will always be honest and up front with you and has very good competitive prices.

He is in tarzana.
