Oil Consumption/Plug Foul
My 88 300E consumes approximately 1 qt of oil in about two months. In addition to this, it also fouls the second spark plug from the front of the care in about the same time frame. Does anyone know if this is related to the valve stem seals ?
I have read other posts speaking of oil consumption but not spark plug foul.

Hi,
oil consumption and foul sparks are almost 100% the valve stem seals. I had this on a '86. I had those exchanged in '92 and ever since had never any problems. The reason is that for those early years the seals were loosing their ability to remain "flexible" and started hardening. The new type of seals (starting '90 if I'm not mistaken) are made of different material compositions. Depending on the milage yours lasted long anyway.

Just like the other guys said, it is a very common problem on these cars especially when oil is not changed regularly.
All you need to do is pull the valve cover off, pump air into the cylinder to hold the valves up, decompress the springs swap in the new valve seals and wha la, problem solved.
Warning the above process is not recommended for someone with little automotive experience.
