Muted Stereo??!!?!??!

ok so ever since i bought the car i havent heard any sound from the stereo system. The headunit is aftermarket and i took off the doorpanels to find that there are aftermarket speakers also. They are hooked up correctly and my headunit comes on, engages the antennae.. but i hear absolutely no sound. No crackling, static, nothing. Seems as if it is muted but it is not. Please help? Thanks!

I had a JVC unit put in my '93 400E. When they hooked it up, only the front dash speakes worked. No door speakers, no rear speakers. They had to bypass the factory amp in the trunk and run new wires for the speakers. Works great now. Maybe whomever installed this setup in yours put the head in and got no sound. Then they replaced the speakers and still got no sound, but never investigated the amp in the car. Maybe in the process they damaged the amp in either the car or the head itself. Looks like some testing is in your future. Should be easy to pull the head, give it power, and hook a speaker you know to be good directly to it and see if you get sound there. If the head unit is putting out power there, you'll need to trace it from there. Good luck. I lack any real specific expertise in stereo stuff, so I paid Crcuit City to rewire all that stuff. I did have them leave the old wiring and connectors intact so that it could be reverted to stock config if anyone ever wanted to do that in the future.

I had the same thing with my car.I tested a old speaker i had laying around and I heard sound.I changed out the speakers and the radio worked fine after that.I guess the blown speaker was making the unit clip.
